The species reaches a maximum length of 95 centimeters, adult animals usually measure between 60 and 70 centimeters. The body and tail, as in other species of the genus, is slender, with ribs on the sides of the tail-stalk. The base color of the shark is dark gray and it is marked by several distinctly delineated light backs (saddle spots) and numerous bright points. There is no clear limitation of the saddle spots in the young animals. The mouth is clearly in front of the eyes, which are quite large for the species. Both the two back fins as well as the anus fin set very far back at the body. The first dorsal fin is placed above the belly fins or directly behind the belly fins, and the anterior fin is far behind the end of the second dorsal fin. The rear edge of the two back fins is straight or slightly convex.
