The crab got its name from its beautifully marbled structure on the Carapax and is rarely found, if on gravelly surfaces to a depth of about 80 meters.

The color of the carapace varies, depending on the incident light from brown to dark brown with white grains, the pereiopods are paler, the Dactylus is colored blue in the fifth segment.
